The Art of Peacemaking: The Gun Sculpture Exhibit

Experience a powerful symbol of global peace at Edmonton’s Expo Centre, where the renowned The Art of Peacemaking: The Gun Sculpture returns for a final display in Alberta. Created by Edmonton artists Sandra Bromley and Wallis Kendal, this monumental artwork took five years to complete and debuted in January 2000 at the Art Gallery of Alberta before beginning its global journey.

Composed of over 7,000 deactivated weapons from around the world, The Art of Peacemaking: The Gun Sculpture has toured three continents, including notable exhibitions at the Canadian Pavilion at the World Fair in Hanover, Germany, and Seoul, Korea’s Centennial Celebration of the Nobel Peace Prize.

The installation features a 5-ton sculpture made from deactivated weapons, a mural of images donated by victims and survivors of violence, and an interactive component where visitors can share their thoughts. Over 180,000 comments and drawings have been contributed to date, making it a living piece of art.

Since its creation for Canada’s Millennium Celebrations, the installation has profoundly impacted over 2 million viewers, with coverage in more than 80 countries. Despite being created over two decades ago, the message of peace remains more relevant than ever.

As artists Sandra Bromley and Wallis Kendal prepare to permanently place the piece, this is a rare opportunity for Albertans to view this historic artwork one last time before it leaves the province for good.
